| UK FIELD STUDY COURSE 2007
- May 2, 2007
May 2 -
Students arrive at Glasgow Airport, Scotland, and are met by Dr Dilley with a 9-seater Mercedes van. Drive to our centre across the border in Keswick, England.
May 2 - Brief stop at Gretna Green on the Scottish side of the border. This was for long a destination for eloping couples. In England if either party to a marriage was under 21, parental permission was needed. In Scotland boys could marry at 14 and girls at 12 without needing permission. As Gretna was the nearest part of Scotland to England it became the favoured destination – especially for adventurers who had won over under-age heiresses!

May 2 - Carlisle, the Border City. The citadel, on the site of the old South or English Gate, was extensively rebuilt in the early 19th century.

May 2 - Approach to the northern edge of the Lake District National Park. The road drops steeply down into Caldbeck village, with High Pike (2159 ft; 658 m) in the background.

May 2 -
Public footpath through a farmyard at Caldbeck.

May 2 -
Remains of 18th-century bobbin mill at The Howk, Caldbeck.

May 2 -
Cald Beck (“beck” is a local name for a stream) which powered the bobbin and saw mills of Caldbeck.
